JLPT vs NAT: Which Japanese Test Should You Take?

BornBright Counselling Team

If you are planning to study in Japan, one of your first questions will be which Japanese test to take. The two names you will hear most are the JLPT and the NAT-TEST. Both are widely used by Japanese language schools, but there are some practical differences.

What is the JLPT?

The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the best-known Japanese test in the world. It has five levels, from N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced). It is usually held twice a year, so you need to plan your preparation around fixed dates.

What is the NAT-TEST?

The NAT-TEST follows a similar level structure (5Q to 1Q) and question style to the JLPT. It is held more often during the year, which can make it easier to fit around an application deadline.

How to choose

  • Check what your chosen school accepts; most accept both at the N5/5Q level.
  • Look at the next test dates and your application deadline.
  • If you want an internationally recognised certificate for the long term, plan to take the JLPT as your Japanese improves.

Preparing for either test

The content of both tests is very similar: vocabulary and kanji, grammar and reading, and listening. Good preparation for one is good preparation for the other. Regular practice, mock tests and speaking practice make the biggest difference.
